WD and Seagate are cutting HD warranties

Two news, published by The Register, caught my attention today. According to the information site, Western Digital will cut the warranty period for Scorpio Blue, Caviar Blue and Caviar Green drives from 3 to 2 years, starting from units shipped after January 1st 2012.

Then Seagate made a similar announcement. After December 31 2011, warranties will be shrinked as following:

  • From 5 to 2 years for consumer electronics;
  • From 5 to 3 years for Constellation, Barracuda XT and Momentus XT drives;
  • From 2 to 1 year for Barracuda and Momentus drives.

These aren’t good news for consumers. Probably both the companies want to lower their internal costs cutting post-sale assistance, to recover part of the economic damages caused by the Thai floodings.

I’ll update with further information once they’ll be available. Stay tuned!
